Algeria is situated in Northern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Morocco and Tunisia. It is also the largest county in Africa. Algeria’s population in 2018 was 42,023,958. The literacy rate stands at 80% and GDP was 170.37 billion USD in 2017. Algeria’s economy remains dominated by the state, a legacy of the country’s socialist post-independence development model. In recent years the Algerian Government has halted the privatization of state-owned industries and imposed restrictions on imports and foreign involvement in its economy. Hydrocarbons have long been the backbone of the economy, accounting for roughly 60% of budget revenues, 30% of GDP, and over 95% of export earnings. Algeria has the 10th-largest reserves of natural gas in the world and is the sixth-largest gas exporter.

Access to formal banking and electronic payment system is limited in Algeria, opening opportunities for MNOs to introduce & develop Mobile Financial Services. One MNO asked Amarante Consulting and its partner Altai to support the development of the MFS strategy, development, piloting and team building, based on the MNO group platform and processes.

Access to formal banking and electronic payment system is limited in Algeria, opening opportunities for MNOs to introduce & develop Mobile Financial Services. One MNO asked Amarante Consulting and its partner to support the development of the MFS strategy, development, piloting and team building, based on the MNO group platform and processes. Amarante’s engagement started with the assessment of the market and strategy formulation, all the way through business planning early implementation, and assistance during piloting.

The following activities were delivered:

  • Business planning: Product & service specifications, Business processes, Marketing and Branding, Business requirements
  • Operational team establishment: Organisation structure, Product management, KPIs, reporting and transition plan
  • Implementation support: Agent network design/build out, Partnership modeling and negotiations, meetings and workshops with potential partners, regulatory and go-to-market assistance, coordination with vendor and MNO team, project committee, product committee, assistance in the implementation of the platform for the pilot, transfer of know-how and capacity building of MNO team.
